Cranky Yellow is currently housed at 2847 Cherokee Street. The Henry W. Kaiser building. Built as a hardware store in 1896 by owner Henry W. Kaiser. The original ornate tin ceiling hangs above the original hardware counter; still being utilized today by Cranky Yellow.
The hardware store operated until 1919. Then Kroger Grocery and Baking Company moved into the building. The Cherokee Street neighborhood viewed the chain store as a menace. Many accused the big box of driving small shops out of business.
Then in 1928 Kroger halted operations at the location. Over the next few decades the space was filled with various businesses: a florist, antique shop, artist studio, embroidery shop and now, Cranky Yellow.
