Oh lord, time for my perennial battle with people I usually agree with. Of course, because I disagree with them I am an evil racist because I have a sense of humor and refuse to become pretentious and hypocritical: http://feministing.com/archives/007996.html
Bear in mind that 90% of what I said was just joking to annoy these oversensitive crazies. Though I do, of course, believe that the problem with Halloween Nooses is overblown and hypersensitive to a ridiculous degree. There are real problems people, this isn’t one of them.
To give you the basics (you can read the whole battle through the link): Some African Americans saw dark-skinned corpses hanging from nooses as Halloween decorations. A preacher went up and asked what they were about, the people told them that they were dark because people turn dark when they decay (they do) and it wasn’t meant to represent African Americans. The preacher did not accept this and said he would protest until they removed it, the people lightened the skin in order to appease them, the congregation still didn’t like it and continued to picket these people’s house until, under pressure from the protesters AND THE MAYOR finally took the decorations down.
I, of course, said this was a stupid overreaction.
They decided I cannot believe this because I am white and the protesters are black.
I said that’s tough, because they aren’t right.
They said I was being a spoiled, privileged-white male and I have to always change whatever it is I am doing if someone says it is racist and explains why (I am not joking, they actually maintain this….I HAVE TO DO IT OR ELSE I AM A JERK-RACIST).
I got annoyed and decided to mess with them while mixing in logic they will never, ever grasp.
Lather, Rinse, Repeat, add my own brand of irreverent, ironically-offensive humor and perhaps you’d all enjoy reading and maybe participating in the “debate”.
(Update: they found Crankyyellow and my bio and posted it on the thread, I was expecting some sort of barrage of angry comments but so far I have been disappointed).
