Home of Amazing Things

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

My dreadful day was basically brutalized by an atrociously alienating alliteration of dumb depression. Though I’m a sack of  silently slithering sadness, you can still stop by Cranky Yellow. You’ll find an awesomely almighty algorithmic assortment of  ridiculously rad jingle junk and happy hordes of handmade happenings. Duh.

Coke Head Doll

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Daniel, our new part-time designer, quickly made this doll after work yesterday! It is sitting quietly in the CY office waiting to be unleashed on the world. Soon you might see it for sale in the shop… That is if we ever want to get rid of it… but why would we do that?

Hello Cranky Blog Readers!

Friday, May 29th, 2009

David was going to show me how to blog, but then he started bleeding and said “I’m bleeding, I’m bleeding, I’ll be right back.”

Now that he is back, we can continue this blog experience.

So today I learned how to post things on etsy.com and flickr.com, though it was a process of trial and error, and I did fail a few times.
When I finally finished, I succeeded in posted such lovely things as:

Oh, BTW, my name is Amanda Beard.  I am Cranky Yellow’s newish employee.  I am not actually a new employee, I am just being paid now.  I take photographs for the store of the merchandise and sometimes of the events.  I helped take a lot of the photos for the Crammed Organisms book.  I am a photography study at Webster University and will be getting a nice new digital camera sometime during the fall semester, so look out for a great improvement in the quality of photos around that time!  Anyway, you’ve probably seen me around, but to put a name to a face, I am on the right in the picture below.  That is Casey Jones on the left, this was at Indie Valentine in 2008.

SHIRTS!

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Hey look! We have shirts! We also have a new shirt model! His name is Eddy. He likes shirts. Do you like shirts? We all like shirts:

Fran Lakato’s shirts have the ability to bend time and space. Or…maybe…force you to tilt the camera at odd angles.

Eddy Ohlms, our model, is pointing to the future! The future of Cassette tapes (of which he is a huge fan). Thankfully, Emily Heimeyer’s Wounded Bird collection has provided him with a 100% cotton manner of expressing his love for Salt ‘n Peppah and Terrence Trent Darby.

Megan Hood

A hood made by Megan. It is very hoodlike:

What? You like it? Yes. It’s futuristic….so…if you don’t like it now perhaps your future self will.

New Stuff During Hard Work

Friday, February 6th, 2009

We’ve been hard at work getting everything un-boxed and set up at our new location 2847 Cherokee Street. It has been a hard 2-ish weeks and things are finally starting to REALLY settle into place. There is still a mind-blowing amount of work to do… but I can tell it’s going to really pay off.

Angelo has been working on getting new artists into our ranks. Here is some of the amazing stuff we’re now stocking:

Milk Teeth: this full color zine will make you drool & want more. It’s made by a local here in Saint Louis. Beautiful work.

Really wonderful little prints by Sara Broski. I adore these bird people. There is an Abe Lincoln bird too… which I didn’t photograph and now wish I had.

A ton of big lovely paintings by Joe Mohr. His work is simply delightful. We stumbled upon his creations at a Crepe place in the Central West End. Ahhh Networking.

Some really cute prints by Mati Rose. I grabbed out my favorites to photograph. There is a whole stack of really great work… and they are all worth checking out!

A plethora of work by Mikeatron. I’ve been obsessed with his work for a while, so when the package arrived at our door, I nearly jumped out of my skin!

We also have the latest crazy/cute work by master Jupey Krusho. I want to buy all of this stuff. It’s so damn cute it makes my brain hurt!

I’ll have some photos to post of the store soon. I need to rest up though.

New Paris Newspaper

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

New Paris Newspaper

NEW PARISIAN is a newspaper released out of HBML junk shop, of Worcester MA. But it’s really just the DOOR of the REFRIGERATOR in the KITCHEN of the IDEA of the NEWSPAPER (for the JUNK SHOP).”

Fine. I just ripped that description from their website… but I couldn’t have said it better myself. I think they were talking about their blog when they wrote that…but I don’t care. Really I don’t.

We only have a few copies of the paper left for you to pick up… so don’t let your butt drag: pick up those cheeks and run in here.

Feeling Sleepy

Little Deer

I’m sitting around after-hours feeling sorry for myself. I’ve been making God’s Eyes like crazy for an upcoming show. I’m getting pretty worn out of wrapping yarn around old paint brushes… so… I’ve decided to throw up the last “new-stuff” photo I took. I’m planning to take some more pictures tomorrow… and I wanted to be able to start new and refreshed.

I’ve been magnetically drawn to little, vintage, plastic, japanese fawn figures recently. I don’t know exactly how many have come into my life… but it’s a lot. Luckily for me, many other people are attracted to them too… so they’ve been moving pretty quickly from our shelves. I think this is one of two we have left around the shop. I guess people overlook it because they’re totally distracted by the zines surrounding it.

Below, and to the left of the fawn is a little vintage plastic wax-molded alligator from the STL Zoo. Apparently they use to have this machine that you could put some money in, select a design and then watch as the machine poured liquid plastic into the mold. Then, POP: out comes a freshly created little toy. I think it was pretty similar to normal injection molding. The machine was surely pulled offline when they realized liquid plastic fumes were giving the tots brain cancer.

We currently have two in the shop. Both of them are alligators. They both also have a custom paint job by some random child of the past. I think that makes them better. The original custom vinyl toy!

I don’t really remember how much we’re selling any of this crap for… so you better stop in and find out for yourself.
