A new collection of selected photography by Rachel Kertz, opening November 5th 2010, will expose a soft and simple world tipped on it’s edge. Rachel’s work is a snapshot into the life of counter-culture youth growing up in conservative small-town Missouri.

Her photos play out like a surreal adventures into magical worlds; Seemingly safe zones, where teens viewed as “different” by the local population can be themselves. Following a varying spectrum of subtle queerness, pop-punk aesthetics, and Victorian dress ups, her work finds quirk and beauty in unassuming places. Each portrait is an adorable testament to the difficulties of finding personal identity in a complex (and often narrow minded) world. There is an honesty and innocence here that city-raised hipsters shooting Polaroids could only wish to capture.

The collection of photos will be exhibited through the month of November 2010 at the Cranky Yellow Gallery.

SUGGESTED PLANTS FROM OUR GARDEN: CHENILLE

We first got our Chenille plant on June 16, 2010, and you can see below on the left what she looked like when we first planted her. Amazingly, on the right you can see what she looks like less than 2 months later on August 7, 2010!

The Chenille plant is also called Foxtails or Red Hot Cattail and originates from India. She has been quite easy to grow with a fair amount of sunlight and daily watering. The plant can be toxic to humans and animals, so keep away from pets and wash your hands after handling. And obviously, don’t ingest it!

There is one way to secure endless praise from the cranky team. Simply drop off seemingly endless truck-loads of amazing vintage/antique junk. That is exactly what Galen Gondolfi, mastermind behind Fort Gondo, has been doing for the last couple of months. It’s his way of supporting our efforts and keeping neat things flowing.

Without fail he will arrive, like the magical Cherokee Street wizard he is, and drop off dirty boxes full of random treasures. Apparently he has a cavernous lair of this stuff and is happy to get it into the hands of people that can use it. We just so happen to be those sorts of people.

Between our shop, our affiliation with the upcycle exchange, and our re-birthing of Finder’s Hive, we can find all of this stuff a home! Some lucky customers even walk in at the right time and get sent home with a box of goodies. It’s all about catching the wave at just the right moment.

So without further delay, I present you with some selections from the two truck loads he delivered today. Even if it is the hottest day of the year, he keeps it flowing. AMAZING!

Every Monday our shop is closed. I know you might assume we are out partying at some trashy hotel with cheap booze and hookers of various prices, but I can assure you that we are hard at work. We are out and about digging up the best new merchandise for you! Our hands get dirty so yours don’t have to.

You see it takes many hours of scouring the mid-west and beyond to find these perky little treasures. We’ve narrowed down our approach to a serious art. We are simply the best at pulling the greatest items from piles and piles of terrible crap. You can trust us to bring you the creme of the crap… erm… crop. You get it.

RIDGEFILD MIDDLE SCHOOL TALENT NITE IS FAMOUS!

Long time friend and collaborator of Cranky Yellow, Jo Firestone, just won the Director’s Award at the 2010 Capital Fringe Festival with her co-star Dylan Marron! They are currently on their second tour of their show.

Their play: Ridgefild Middle School Talent Nite is an awkward collection of prepubescent acts… and the press/producers of the Fringe took notice! The Washington post named them an editor’s pick, Jessie Newman’s blog C.A.P.S. Love gave them a really nice write up, and one critic even called out Jo to honor her performance as one of the best he’s seen.

We’re so proud here at Cranky Yellow and wish them the best of luck with the rest of their tour! Keep popping those zits, kids!

Look. You don’t know what it’s like to be as addicted to doors as we are. We need our fix, and fast. You have to help us. We need free doors of all sizes and qualities. Doors Doors Doors! NOW NOW NOW!

TERRARIUM EXCITEMENT

We’ve got one brand spanking new terrarium in the shop! It is a total trial for us. If we can keep it alive over the next few weeks, we will begin stocking alot more for your plant-loving pleasure! Apparently with little up-keep this beauty will stay alive. We will see about that.

Supposing you want this baby more than us you can buy it now for only $25.00! We will have it on the front desk. It can be your trial-project, instead, if you just hand us some real American clams!

It comes with a cute little hand-written tag with instructions! If that’s not an unmentionable selling point perhaps the easy care will be:

Put near a window – away from any A. C. Unit.
Keep the jar closed.
Splash a little distilled water in the jar every month or so.

It also has a little blue ceramic horse in it. That shit is sick; like vomiting uncontrollably in the backseat of your mother’s car sick. Get it.
