Mondays already suck for the strange breed of the higher education students. But just to top it off 3 out of 4 people in my apartment had some very unfortunate happenings.

One of my roommates was called to jury duty. Everyone we know who has had to go for jury duty and lives more than 30 mins from wherever they were called from got out of it. She lives two hours from where she was called and they told her she still had to go. Now she's freaking out about her classes because she can't postpone her jury duty over summer.
Another one of my roommates was just doing the dishes when a glass broke under her hand and she had to get 11 stitches; 8 on her thumb and 3 on her pinky.
Now me, I found out that my identity has been stolen. I don't have any credit cards so the person has just been taking advantage of my social security number.

All of this collective negative energy in our apartment is gathering up and making all of us ready to throw a shit fit at an anonymous person (we're not mad at each other, just life).

Biodiesel

After reading Angelo's post on the CY home page about energy costs, I thought I'd put in my few cents.

I think more investment should be put towards biodiesel. I recently bought an old diesel truck (~20 mpg) and quickly began missing 35 mpg in my old gas Escort, so I thought I'd look this stuff up and hopefully I can start making it soon.

Biodiesel is made of vegetable oil, which is broken down chemically to allow it to run in diesel engines. Methanol (which can be made from plant materials) and lye are also used in its production. Vegetable oil is a renewable resource, and a certain type of algae can produce several hundred gallons per acre.

Since biodiesel is made from plant material, which was made from atmospheric carbon, biodiesel emissions are basically carbon-neutral. Other pollutants from biodiesel are at about 1/10th the amount per gallon compared to petroleum-based diesel. Plus, it makes your car smell like French fries. :D

Biodiesel is also biodegradable, according to one book I've read it's "as safe as sugar, environmentally speaking".

Biodiesel can be used in almost all diesel engines, with little or no modification. Older vehicles (such as my 1986 Blazer) with natural rubber fuel lines will need newer, biodiesel-resistant lines, and the fuel filter may have to be changed more often at first.

Since biodiesel is made out of vegetable oil, it lubricates the engine as it runs through it, allowing the engine to last much longer. Other chemical properties of biodiesel are also beneficial for a diesel engine. Engine performance is slightly increased in some cases due to better lubrication. MPG remains about the same or slightly higher.

Plant material for biodiesel can be grown pretty much anywhere, including here in the Midwest, where it could help farmers by giving them a profitable crop to grow. Or, waste vegetable oil from restaurants can be used. No need to drill for oil anywhere (like Alaskan wilderness), no need for oil wars.

And, it can be made at home for about .80 - $1 per gallon relatively easily. As an added bonus, a byproduct is glycerine, so you could make your own soap, too, if you wanted to.

There are plenty of diesel engines on the road (and at sea) already. The technology is there. Americans love their cars (I know I do) and would hate giving up personal vehicles altogether. As biodiesel would give us a cleaner environment, less foreign involvement in the interest of oil, more income for farmers, more reliable cars, AND we could keep our cars, I think biodiesel is worth a closer look.

Leviticus 20:13 KILL THE GAYS!

I recently argued with a bunch...well...a HORDE of Christians on Second Life while doing research into the possible educational promises of the technology. I decided to stop into one the biggest Christian sites, survey the place, and maybe even bug a few Christians.

At some point I talked to them about Leviticus 20:13, which forbids men to lay with men on pain of death.

I asked them, repeatedly, why a perfectly good god would actually instruct the Jews to kill people who were doing no real harm to anyone else. These were the major answers I got:

1. Well,er...but it was a differen't time!

2. We are not supposed to question our lord and master, we are his humble slaves!

3. Those people brought death upon themselves by sinning.

4. That passage doesn't exist.

5. That passage exists but it doesn't tell you to kill gays.

6. That passage exists and tells you to kill gays but only because the gays were a bunch of rapists and "debaucherers".

(The above three statements came from the exact same person in succession).

7. Homosexuality is harmful because you get ass pains and mouth pains.

(This one came from a "former" homosexual. Not only does he not realize that women are frequently injured by penises, especially when they are young and unexperienced, but "mouth strains" also afflict women.) Also, not using enough lubrication is bound to hurt your ass.

Do I even need to list all the medical problems (physical and viral) that come from heterosexual sex?

8. Homosexuality is harmful because gay people have a high rate of mental disorder.

First off, it is probably true that we have a higher rate of mental disorder. The cause, of course, is social alienation and lack of social support for our relationships, lack of guidance and real role models.

Secondly: Mental disorder is still a minority affliction, most gay people do not have mental disorders, so it cannot be that homosexuality itself causes these problems.

Thirdly: Young adults and seniors have the highest rates of suicide and mental disorder. Does being young or old make you have mental disorders? Maybe being a teenager should be a sin as well?

Fourthly: It is also true that African Americans have a higher rate of incarceration and criminal behavior (still, most African Americans do not commit crime). So it must follow that black people are inherently criminal, right? Their blackness makes them commit crimes?

This is a common problem with racists and bigots: lack of an ability to put things into a proper context.

They also like to spout off bullshit like: EVEN IN COUNTRIES WHERE THEY LIKE GAYS GAYS BE SO CRAZY!

Places like the Netherlands may have provided equality for their homosexual populations in law, but that's the same as in the United States for African Americans. By law African Americans are to be treated equally, that isn't exactly the case now is it?

Also, there is this problem with people: they don't mind gay people in general but they do not want their children to be gay. My mother has this sort of problem; she never really had anything against gays before, but she went nuts when she found out I was a raging homo.

In big "liberal" cities like New York, it is estimated that 40% of the youths are homosexuals, and a high proportion of young prostitutes.

Is it a problem? Yes. Does it show how evil and delinquent homosexuals are? No. Any oppressed population not given the same amount of social, emotional, and political support as the rest is going to have a higher proportion of these troubling behaviors. It is probably worse for homosexuals due to the fact that, unlike most other minority groups (especially races) we are almost always born into the opposite or majority group. Our parents are almost always different from us, and usually disapprove or abosolutely hate/oppose who we are.

Rarely will an African American boy be raised by parents that think he is a sinful, evil bastard just because he is black. We find regularly cases of parents disowning, torturing (physically and mentally) their children, sending them to anti-gay bootcamps, and otherwise harrassing their children due to their inherent homosexuality.

Also, the Netherlands does treat its homosexual population with greater tolerance, and the suicide rate in that country is, on the whole, only about 6%. There is no way that that is all homosexuals, so it stands to reason that their suicide rate is also lower.

The Netherlands, perhaps one of the most tolerant nations on earth, also has an extremely low suicide rate, imagine that?

Even if all the stereotypes of homosexuals are true and caused by our homosexuality itself.....why on earth should we be murdered for it? At any point in time?

They kept making excuses, especially that it was an old policy meant only for the Jews in order to keep them in line and help them survive and that we are now in a "grace" period. Of course, it doesn't matter if a criminal changed his or her ways later on, if they killed or ordered people to kill for no good reason or innappropriate reasons they still did wrong; they are certainly not "perfectly good" people.

A god that orders his followers to commit acts of violence on innocent people, people who are doing no harm to others, is not a good god. I don't mind them worshipping the bastard, but could they at least be honest about him and admit that maybe he isn't so perfect after all?

I also get this one alot: Well, that was never meant to be in the bible in the first place!

Well, if that's true how can you trust ANYTHING the bible says? I thought it was supposed to be the word of god; if you know it has been tampered with it can't be 100% reliable. So how come you are 100% sure that you are right if your holy book is known to contain errors?

In conclusion: Evangelical Christians need to stop reading that damn wad of poorly written, poorly edited, and downright ludicrious paper and start thinking.

They actually told me that reason and thought were the enemy of god, that's a direct quote "enemy of god". They told me they KNEW they were right because they felt stuff. Anything I said was literally the work of the devil if it contradicted anything they thought.

Poor Haitians Resort to Eating Dirt
By JONATHAN M. KATZ – 1 day ago

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — It was lunchtime in one of Haiti's worst slums, and Charlene Dumas was eating mud. With food prices rising, Haiti's poorest can't afford even a daily plate of rice, and some take desperate measures to fill their bellies. Charlene, 16 with a 1-month-old son, has come to rely on a traditional Haitian remedy for hunger pangs: cookies made of dried yellow dirt from the country's central plateau.

The mud has long been prized by pregnant women and children here as an antacid and source of calcium. But in places like Cite Soleil, the oceanside slum where Charlene shares a two-room house with her baby, five siblings and two unemployed parents, cookies made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening have become a regular meal.

"When my mother does not cook anything, I have to eat them three times a day," Charlene said. Her baby, named Woodson, lay still across her lap, looking even thinner than the slim 6 pounds 3 ounces he weighed at birth.

Though she likes their buttery, salty taste, Charlene said the cookies also give her stomach pains. "When I nurse, the baby sometimes seems colicky too," she said.

Food prices around the world have spiked because of higher oil prices, needed for fertilizer, irrigation and transportation. Prices for basic ingredients such as corn and wheat are also up sharply, and the increasing global demand for biofuels is pressuring food markets as well.

The problem is particularly dire in the Caribbean, where island nations depend on imports and food prices are up 40 percent in places.

The global price hikes, together with floods and crop damage from the 2007 hurricane season, prompted the U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency to declare states of emergency in Haiti and several other Caribbean countries. Caribbean leaders held an emergency summit in December to discuss cutting food taxes and creating large regional farms to reduce dependence on imports.

...........

On a side note: This is the nation that had its democratically elected leader overthrown by the United States (and I think Great Britain had some involvement as well). As usual the United State's policy seems to be rape and pillage when it comes to the third world.

This year will probably go much more smoothly than last, given the fact that I know what the hell I am doing this time around. I havn't decided what topics to choose for this one. I have decided to reuse the posters made for the last one.

So far I havn't gotten anyone to help me, but I am sure I can find a few with a little advertising and a heavy dose of guilt and peer pressure. We'll see, I may even get my fellow group-members in one of my classes to help out (seeing as doing community service/activism work is required).

I have a good feeling about this year, I really do. Hopefully I am not being overly optimistic.
