Dora Magrath What was your first word, or the first word you can ever remember saying? I don't remember what my first word was, but I talked A LOT when I was really young. Apparently I said like 500 words by the time I was ten months. (I know this because my mom wrote all of them down.) The best one though was tossinare. (pronounced toe-si-nare) That's what I called the telephone for some reason we could never figure out. My mom thinks its because I'm a Martian. Which is probably true. What word do you hate the most (in any language)? Any hate-ridden words. The n-word, fag, kyke, etc. Those words are unnecessary and demonstrate the power of language. It can be extremely damaging to say these words and have them said to you. Language can be used as a tool to communicate in a beautiful and profound way, language can even be artful. Words like these really fuck that capacity of language up.Why did you choose to become a professional singer, what was your second choice for a career? Growing up I danced all the time, and I always wanted to be a professional dancer. That's what my major was in college at first. I didn't really even realize I could sing until I was 19 and I decided to not be a professional dancer, and I had to figure out what the fuck to do with my life. Still, though, I would be extremely happy dancing for a living.Who is your favorite band, composer, or solo-artist? Fiona Apple. What I look for in any performer, musician or otherwise, is deep emotional involvement in the performance. So of course Billie Holiday is also a favorite. And I love risk-takers. Fiona takes a lot of risks in her songwriting, which you don't find in the mainstream very often. Can you do that thing where you break a glass with your voice? Haha. Not that I'm aware of, but maybe I'll try. And make a youtube video of it.Did you receive singing-lessons or are you some sort of musical demon sent to tempt us toward the dark-side with your voice? I AM A DEMON! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! haha just kidding, I've gotten three semesters of voice lessons from Dan Inglis who is the man and has helped me so much. Now that I've got my voice mostly worked out (though there's always more work to do) I'm focusing on piano lessons. Aren't I such a studious person?Would you ever sing catchy, poppy, high-energy songs if you were paid millions of dollars a year? The only reason I would sing catchy, poppy, high-energy songs, is because that's what I'm into sometimes. I wouldn't do it to make money. I went to this recording studio to record back-up vocals one time and I absolutely hated the songs I was singing on, but I needed money really bad. I vowed to myself that I would never practice my art just for money ever again. It sucks the life out of it. Its lame. I'd rather have a day job and play gigs I really care about at night.Which famous singer do you think you could take in a fight? (For example: Gwen Stefani, Bette Midler, Jennifer Lopez) Joanna Newsome? How many times a day do you sing? Sometimes it gets to the point where I don't even realize when I'm singing. so a lot.How many times a day would you like to sing? Just as much as I do. :) That's what's so fucking amazing about majoring in your passion. What do you love about St. Louis? The LoopWhat do you hate about St. Louis? Racism. Can you dance as well as you sing? (If yes, would you ever want to do a music video?) I'm pretty sure I'm a better dancer than singer, only because I've been in dance classes since I was 3. Dance has sort of been put on the back burner since I'm a music major now, but I'm going to make a music video for part of my senior project (which starts next semester!) I thoroughly love shaking my ass, and when I figure out how to mix booty bumping beats with quirky jazzy pop my life will be complete. But until I do, I think I'll do some Fosse-esque choreography to jazzy sorts of songs. What is your favorite music video of all time? It's a toss up between Ciara's "Like a Boy" and Fiona Apple's "Never is A Promise."What musical instrument do you most enjoy holding? Why? My ukulele. Its fucking adorable. How many concerts have you given, which was your favorite venue, and how do you think you've done as a whole? favorite venue= this party I played at with my band at Hampshire College (my school) a few weeks ago. The party is called Tour de Franzia, it involves box wine and a bunch of people riding around on bicycles naked afterwards. It happens every year. What would have to happen in order for you to consider yourself a "success"? I have this vague dream of being all famous and shit, but that dream scares the crap out of me. I will consider myself succesful, really, when I sing Kol Nidre ( a traditional melody) at Yom Kippur services at my temple. That's been something I've wanted to do my entire life. And if I could play Sally Bowles in a top of the line production of Cabaret. I'll also be very happy if I can be comfortable and pay my bills on music. If I happen to make a fuckload of money, that would be pretty great so that my parents wouldn't have to work anymore and could have nice comfy retirements. So basically, there are lots of confusing ideas floating around in my head about this, but they're becoming clearer and clearer as I talk to more and more people and stay centered within myself.18. How many nations in the world can you identify on a map? Do you have a map? What do you enjoy singing about the most? Heartache and Happiness. Equally, but in different ways. What are you trying to do with your voice? What effect do you want your voice to have on people and the world? I sing because I have to, I sing because I love to. I don't really think that hard about it. Something I'm much more cognizant of is my songwriting. I want to take risks, to say important things. And in my performances calm myself down, get myself in a zone where I feel that I can deal with life better. And hopefully it has the same effect on other people.Have you ever been in love? (If so, could they sing?) Yes, I have. Three times. Kind of a lot for only being 21, but hey, it gives me songwriting material. I've never dated anyone who could sing super well, but I have dated a fair amount of musicians. I'm super into bass players.Any projects in the works you'd like to share? an EP called Heartsrings. In the next year or so it 'twill be professionally finished. In the meantime, I may put out another little demo because I've been writing a lot and it'd be nice if people could hear the development. So much material, I'm not really sure how to format it all quite yet. But it'll be fantastically fun once I get that all together. Oh! And I might be moving to Austin, TX this summer, which would be great. The music scene there is incredible. Also, you guys should all check out Nicole Berke and Maesa Rae. Both on myspace, both based in Mass. Really incredible singer/songwriters and really great people. Nicole and I co-wrote a song together this summer called "I'm a Catch." Super raunchy and empowering, watch out for it on my EP! << Back To Artist Interviews |
