Ken Garduno What part of you does this art come from? Everything i do comes from my sleep deprived mind. What messages or themes are you trying to get across with your art? I actually prefer hearing how the viewer interprets my work. I love it when someone comes up to me with their own personal stories that they pull out of my work. Are there any art movements that you have conspicuously stolen or drawn inspiration from? I have PLENTY of influences throughout art history. It's hard not to be influenced by so many who have done great before me. If i had to pick a few, I would say Surrealism, Futurists, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and of course the golden years of illustration. I could keep going...When did you stop becoming an amateur and start becoming a professional artist? I think my career began after I graduated, and got my first editorial gig. That was about a year and a half ago.![]() Title: Parasite and Host Size: 15.75" x 19.75" Medium Ink/Wash on BFK Rives The Conference Room Gallery Who has been supporting you the most in your journey? My family....and my girlfriend. My friends are also very supportive. What's been your greatest accomplishment? I think my greatest accomplishment so far was graduating from Art Center in Pasadena. It was kind of a big deal for me.What's your greatest embarrassment? I always put myself in embarassing situations. It's hard to phase me anymore. How well do you sleep at night? Do you like really soft mattresses, hard ones, or something in-between? I'm doing this interview at 3:45 am.That should tell you how well i sleep. I actually like hard mattresses...even the floor is comfortable for me.Which of your artworks are you most proud of? I'm most proud of the works that were on the verge of being thrown away. I make it a challenge to save a bad piece. I keep working on it until i like it, and somehow those always end up being favorites. I rarely scrap a piece.![]() Title: Field Incident Size: 11.75" x 15.75" Medium: Ink/Wash on BFK Rives The Conference Room Gallery Which of your artworks would you be happy to have buried in the deepest chemical waste pit in New Jersey? I like keeping bad stuff(for the most part). These pieces can be something that I can look back on and laugh at.Would you rather serve in heaven or reign in hell? I'm just trying to survive here on earth. Hell sounds scary. What would you most like to change about California? Do you think your art could do it (or help do it)? There are many problems here in California. Traffic sucks. I dont think my art can help that.Which newspaper did you most like working with and why? I love all the papers I've worked with. Every assignment is different, and I love that about editorial illustration. It's great working with different art directors. I dont really have a favorite .Which newspaper would you never wish to work with again? I havent had that "bad" experience yet. I guess I'm pretty new to this illustration thing still. I hope I never have a bad story to tell.![]() Title: Voyeurs Size: 11.75" x 15.75" Medium: Ink/Wash on BFK Rives The Conference Room Gallery Which newspaper or magazine have you always wanted to do illustrations for? My favorite publications for illustration have always been the New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and Playboy.Do you consider yourself to be a prolific artist or do you only do it when you need the money? I've been told that im a prolific artist. I really am...it keeps me sane.Which movie best captures the spirit of your art or yourself in general? (do you own a copy?) I always relate to characters in movies that are a bit crazy. I'm not sure what that says about myself. I cant think of anything specific. I'll probably remember after I finish this interview.Which of your works best captures who you truly are? Most of my gallery work is like a visual journal. I tell my stories through these pictures.
Have you ever been in love? What did they think of your artwork? Yes.My girlfriend is one of my best critics...I always take a pic of my finished piece on my phone and send it to her for her critique. If you had to nuke one city on the planet, which would it be and why? I havent traveled much, but I only have found cities that I love. I'm sure there is a city out there with horrible people, but I havent found it yet.Where is your work headed? What's the next stage of your artistic development? Good question.I'm discovering new stuff all the time. Someday I want to get back into oil painting. I'm in no rush to get to anything new.I trust my instincts. They have done well for me so far.
What important things have you learned while being a professional artist? I now realize the importance of business knowledge in illustration. I have very little. I also realized how hard it is to get an illustration career going. It's an uphill battle. What else have you got to say to the world? What do you want us to know that hasn't been covered? It's now 4 a.m. I'm about to start sketching. This is where things get interesting....<< Back To Artist Interviews |
